"The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web"                                                         -Pablo Picasso

Unearthed Surrealist Bust

Surrealist Bust

13in x 15in x 6in

clay, spray paint

In this piece, I was inspired by the Artist Jess Riva Cooper. She uses flowers and various leaf designs to surround the face of her bust. After seeing her pieces, I thought I could do something with leaves and vines as well. I incorporated additional dirt to make it seem as though my bust was coming out of the ground. I decided to spray paint my bust bright green to create a contrast with the earthy dirt and leaves, which helps the face glow.

Artwork inspired by: Alex De Witte

Description: Alex de Witte is a famous artist known for his deformed pieces of art. In 2015-16 he created several ceramics pieces which became known as "the New Deformed Ceramics." The pieces have a particular texture that he experimented on, defining a skin for his vases and bowls. He developed the technique of an "unregulated glaze process." The residue in the kiln after a firing develops the color and intensity of the skin. Each piece is quite unique.

I was inspired by Alex De Witte’s deformed ceramic pieces. When I first discovered them, I was intrigued by their deformities. Often times I feel as though artists try to make their works perfectly symmetrical and perfectly formed, but I liked how Witte's ceramic pieces were different. I like how his glazes are illustrated as spotty and flaky and I wanted to try to create a deformed piece of my own which had some sort of spotty glaze.
